This is so special ❤️

The creative juices were flowing (and dripping from one beard in particular) for our October Burger of the Month, “The White Buffalo”!

It was inspired by the indie band and our guest chef Peter Michaels’ love of music! The long time Red Deer radio host was ALL in to help give back to a local cause near and dear to his heart.

Peter helped dream up this tribute burger which included a bison patty, pork belly, smoked white cheddar, Snake Lake Brewing Co. Lake Varsity Hall bbq sauce, Blindman Brewing Triphammer drunken onions, tomato, mixed greens and chipotle aioli with sliced jalapeño garnish on a pretzel bun!

$2 from every burger sold went directly to his charity of choice, Alzheimer Society Alberta and Northwest Territories, which provides education and support for families living with dementia. Thanks to the INCREDIBLE support of our Burger of the Month program, Peter handed over a cheque for $1588!

Peter’s Dad was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. His family has reached out to the Society’s Red Deer office and thanks to their help and information about the disease and local programs, he says they’re feeling much more confident they can handle everything that comes their way.

More than 45,800 people in Alberta have been diagnosed with dementia. The local Alzheimer Society office provides educational programs and support groups to over 1,000 clients in the Central Alberta region.

We’re blessed with the BEST guests who get behind our Burger of the Month program month after month, allowing us the opportunity to give back over $57,000 to local charities over the past 33 months! THANK-YOU!

November’s Burger of the Month is “Lake Life”, created in collaboration with local guest Chef Sean McIntyre, the Mayor of Sylvan Lake. It includes The Ranch Gate Market grass fed beef patty, smoked cheddar, crispy onions, 2 strips of bacon, basil aioli, and a drizzle of hot sauce on a brioche bun with one hot wing and one salt + pepper wing on top!

$2 from every burger sold will go directly towards Sean’s charity of choice, Sylvan Lake & Area Community Partners Association.

?❤️?❤️?❤️?❤️

THANK-YOU to all our guests who help make this happen!

Smiles from ear to ear!

Mission accomplished!

A HUGE thank-you to Father Lacombe Catholic School and their Leadership Students who helped us scoop up more than 150 ice cream sandwiches, all to help support students and families in need in the school community.

In September we kicked off our new Ice Cream Sandwich Program. $1 from every one of these treats sold in the restaurant is donated to a local school. We have decided to kick back the entire $4 purchase price for the kid’s pop-up sale back to the school.

(Final numbers aren’t quite in yet, but we should be delivering a cheque soon for $600).

School Principal Maria Wagner says the money will be used for their Student Support Fund. The school dips into that fund for various needs; providing snacks in the classroom for kids who haven’t had breakfast before arriving to school, for students who want to play sports or be involved in other extracurricular activities that may not be able to because of financial reasons, it’s also been utilized to provide gift cards to school families in need.

We cannot say enough about the Leadership students at the school who chipped in to help with this pop-up sale. These grades 4-6 students organize events at the school; everything from fundraisers to social justice projects. They are gearing up for a “Scare Away Hunger” campaign on Halloween to collect items for the food bank while they are trick-or-treating, and they also have a “Coats for Christ” program in the works where they will be collecting coats for the homeless and needy.

We have some AMAZING kids in our community!

In December we’ll be on the road again scooping at another school, stay tuned!

This. Never. Gets. Old.

We’re better together and that most definitely was the case with August’s Burger of the Month the “BREW-BQ BURGER”, taking our collaborations a big step up!

Our local guest chef was Matt Hamill of Red Shed Malting. He helped create this meaty collab burger using Paddy’s Barbecue Brewery smoked pastrami from Calgary, an Alberta beef patty, swiss cheese, house-made ketchup, drunken onions with Blindman Brewing porter and a pickle spear on a pretzel bun!! $2 from every burger sold went directly to his charity of choice, the Red Deer Hospice Society. Thanks to great guest support, we were able to turn over a cheque for $1566!

The hospice is a residential end-of-life care facility in Red Deer dedicated to caring for the terminally ill and improving quality of life in a community based, home like setting. The funds from this Burger of the Month will support their current expansion campaign, which will ultimately allow 100 additional residents and their families’ access to palliative end-of-life care at the hospice each year. Grand opening celebrations are coming up in October and fundraising efforts continue for this $5.2 million-dollar expansion.

Matt was exposed to the Hospice, the work they do and the impact they make on families through his Mom, who is a volunteer. He understands the need for this expansion and the challenges of fundraising for a cause that is tied to a period of life that most of us avoid thinking about. Matt was thrilled for this opportunity and others to give back to the Hospice.

We’re blessed with the BEST guests who get behind our Burger of the Month program month after month, allowing us the opportunity to give back over $50,000 to local charities over the past 31 months! THANK-YOU!

September’s Burger of the Month is the “Eat your Feelings”!

Our local guest chef Dr. Jody Carrington provided the inspiration for this poutine burger. It’s an Alberta beef patty, cheese curds, Scholing’s fries, house-made gravy, candy bacon, onion rings, chipotle BBQ sauce, and leaf lettuce on a pretzel bun with a pickle spear! $2 from every burger sold will go directly to her charity of choice, Avery’s Legacy, which supports newly bereaved parents.

Honored. Humbled. JACKED!

For the third year in a row we’ve picked up some hardware from Culinaire Magazine’s Alberta’s 2019 Finest Drinks List awards. This time around a Diamond Award for Best Alberta Content and a Gold Award for Best Beer List!

Alberta has a ROCK’N craft beer and distillery scene so why not promote what’s available here at home. From the beginning, we’ve been all about supporting local, using local food and beverage suppliers, supporting other local businesses and giving back to the community that generously supports us. Those in the craft scene are crushing it, making amazing beer and spirits for us to serve, so they truly deserve the credit.

Our “winning list” is simply our everyday drink menu. Over 150 craft beers, our Alberta focused spirit selection and seasonal selections. It is nothing more than what we do every day https://cilantroandchive.ca/drinks/

In 2018 Cilantro and Chive was recognized with the Diamond Award for Best Alberta Content and the Gold Award for Best Beer List and in 2017 the Diamond Award for Best Alberta Content.

Terry Andryo was on the selection committee in 2017 and actively engaged in Alberta agriculture and the craft beer scene. His point of view is from the farmers’ side of the table, engaged in Agricultural Marketing with ATB Financial:
“I’m guilty of it; I eat, drink and embrace local. In my travels, I venture a lot, and I often go out of my way to experience the best of what’s local and fresh regionally, but I’ve never experienced a selection in both depth and breadth that I’ve encountered at Cilantro and Chive in Lacombe. Not only do they support the immediate geography of offerings, but also their list of Albertan
made Craft Beers and Spirits is unparalleled. Their core offering of local beverages is considerably large; add to that seasonal taps and special casks that rotate periodically, creating a cornucopia to select from. You’ve raised the local bar quite substantially Cilantro and Chive, well played.”

The winning lists from the 2019 Alberta’s Finest Drinks Lists awards are featured in the September issue of Culinaire. We’re among some great company, the cream of the crop from major markets like Edmonton and Calgary.

We can’t wait to see the local products we can showcase and how much FUN we can have with our 2020 drink menus!

Thank-you Culinaire Magazine!

“We most definitely have something to Taco’bout!”

July’s Burger of the Month “The Taco Burger” was a HUGE hit, with guest support helping us turn over $1,740 to Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre!

Our guest chef for July was local hairstylist Jenna Bell, who helped create this summer dream burger; an Alberta beef patty, complete with shredded cheddar, nacho chips, pico de gallo, avocado crema, shredded lettuce and chipotle aioli on a brioche bun! $2 from every burger sold went directly to her charity of choice, Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre.

The Centre supports families and the local community to help children with special needs reach their full potential. The cause is near and dear to Jenna’s heart and she believes in the dedication and positive influence Aspire provides, and the big impact they have in each child’s life. Aspire will use these dollars to directly support families needing their services here in central Alberta.

We’re blessed with the BEST guests who get behind this program month after

Cilantro and Chive’s first recipients of the “Don & Clare Burns Hospitality Scholarship”

Hospitality.

By definition it is “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers”

If you’re in for a good read, here we go ?

My parents Don & Clare Burns dedicated their lives in service and hospitality. To those in their community, friends, family, and even to strangers they met on the street.

Recently, my parents passed away – but because of how their legacy impacted me in my own hospitality career, the owners of Cilantro and Chive (Rieley and Kim Kay) have started a new annual Memorial Scholarship in my parent’s name for $1500, given to one of our own team members based on their application of Hospitality and Service.

So many on our team applied, and many stood out for what Hospitality meant to them. However when my siblings and I read over the applicants, we couldn’t decide on just one. So our family estate will grant also a second person to receive the Scholarship in it’s inaugural year.
❤️❤️

ALYSSA SHACKLETON (left)
*Bachelor of Arts with a major in Psychology at Red Deer College
(in her words:)
“Once I graduate, I would like to work in a school setting as a councilor for children with mental health problems. Over the years I have become a huge advocate for mental health awareness because our mental health is just as important as our physical health.”
“Hospitality to me means being kind, approachable, friendly, warm hearted and generous to everyone that comes into the place of work. I believe that customers should feel welcome and be treated like friends. Hospitality means going above and beyond the customer expectations.”

JANAYA FISHER (right)
*Bachelor of Arts with a major in International Relations at the University of Calgary
(in her words:)
“I was able to experience a part of the world that is suffering and longing for help….I learnt how little many people live with and the happiness they carry in their hearts. Being able to live alongside a new culture and build relationships, even when we could not understand each other’s language was an experience that taught me how to serve with genuine selflessness.”
“Hospitality should be given not just at the first interaction of people I come across, but it should be something I am giving the whole time of the interaction. It is not simply a one-time smile or greeting, but it is in the continuation of my interactions. Hospitality means continuous liberality. Living a life of hospitality means putting others first even when its not being reciprocated as it’s a practice that will leave a lasting impression on others.”

Congratulations to both Janaya & Alyssa as our first recipients of the Don & Clare Burns Memorial Scholarship!
