Helping the United Way “Period Promise” Campaign in Red Deer!

What happens when you get a team of women together, some local breweries and a great cause?!  Plenty of smiles and laughs, tasty beer of course and a nice chunk of change to help fuel an incredible pilot project underway in some Red Deer Public Schools.

In mid April, eight female team members from Cilantro and Chive had the opportunity to spend some time at four local breweries, creating casks to serve up as part of a “Period Promise” campaign fundraiser.  Huge thanks to Blindman Brewing, Snake Lake Brewing Company, Troubled Monk and Red Hart Brewing for their generous contributions of time and product to help make this event a reality.

United Way Central Alberta is fuelling that “Period Promise” campaign and Soroptimist International Central Alberta is behind a pilot project that will bring free tampons, pads, and dispensers to all washrooms at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, Eastview Middle School, Normandeau School and G.H. Dawe School.  Dispenser installation is underway now.

An international movement is building, bringing public awareness to period poverty, and the need for free and accessible access to menstrual products in public restrooms, including schools.  Periods are a fact of life and menstrual products are a necessity, sadly not everyone can afford them.  The campaign will help ensure students do not miss school, extracurricular, sports or social activities because they don’t have access to the products they need, helping restore dignity and gender equality.

This pilot project bears a $27,000 price tag.  A gender-equality grant from the Red Deer District Community Foundation will help take care of more than $20,000 and the United Way Central Alberta is funding the remainder.

On Tuesday, April 20th all four casks were served up at our Red Deer location with 100% of proceeds earmarked for the “Period Promise” campaign.  Cilantro and Chive Lacombe Assistant Manager Danika Foesier was thrilled to turn over a cheque for $1000 today, April 26th.
