Hiy Hiy! (a Cree thank-you)

“We just try. We help a lot of people in a lot of quiet ways as best we can.”

Hiy Hiy! (a Cree thank-you)
Words from our October Burger of the Month Guest Chef in Red Deer Corky Larsen Jonasson when speaking about her cause of choice, the Red Feather Women. Corky is a proud Cree/Danish Métis Elder, and a published author, committed to living a life of traditional teachings and ceremony and sharing those teachings with others.

“Corky’s Buffalo Burger” included bison, smoked cheddar cheese, arugula, beefsteak tomato, onion, truffle aioli and an olive tapenade on a house-made Bannock bun with a skewered grape tomato! $2 of every burger sold went directly to Red Feather Women, Red Deer Alberta

Red Feather Women grew from the experiences of a group of women, indigenous and nonindigenous, working together, making connections during the ‘Walking With Our Sisters’ installation in June 2015 in Red Deer. Immersed in ceremony, the “vamps” – the pretty beaded and decorated tops of the unfinished moccasins, represented the unfinished lives of close to 2000 missing and murdered women, LGBTQ individuals and children that did not make it home from the residential schools.

After working side by side for nearly a year, Corky notes “us women bonded and had greater understanding of each other. Together we guided Red Deer peeps through some pretty intense monthly community conversations. We also understood that after the Walking With Our Sisters ceremony left Red Deer for Comox, BC, the issues did not. It resulted in a strong desire for the group to make a difference, act on social/justice issues and continue the work of raising awareness.”

Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Corky helped us hand over $1254 to Red Feather Women today!

Thanks to the amazing support we see from our guest’s month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $115,000 to local charities over the past 69 months!

THANK-YOU!

Some words from Randy :
“We chose Saving Grace as the charity to raise money for because we are big animal lovers. When we lost our beloved Bailey last summer, we realized how lucky we were to have had him for almost 15 years and what a great life he had with us. With that, we were also reminded of all the animals out there who unfortunately don’t have that safe home right from the start or the access to the medical care needed. We have so much respect for everything that this organization endures and strongly believe that Saving Grace is and continues to help make a big difference in our community”

“Pawsitively” awesome day giving back to Old MacDonald Kennels!

When you meet young people like 11-year-old Azaylia Dietz, you know we’re in great hands!  This young Guest Chef has a BIG heart and a love of animals.  She was excited to help create a burger in hopes of helping all pets find loving homes.

Azaylia served as September Guest Chef at our Red Deer location, providing the creative juices for the “Chicken Shawarma” Burger.  It included a garlic buttered brioche bun, marinated chicken thigh, house-made tzatziki, red onion, olives, diced jalapeno, tomato slice, green peppers, feta cheese, lettuce, garnished with a double olive skewer!  $2 of every burger sold went directly to Azaylia’s charity of choice – Old MacDonald Kennels & Animal Services!

Old MacDonald Kennels is a safe place for stray and unwanted dogs.  They created a fun and safe environment for pet boarding dogs, and they use funds generated from boarding clients to help them operate a NO Kill Animal Shelter.  The shelter uses donations in a variety of ways, often towards veterinary expenses as many animals arrive requiring immediate veterinary attention.

Azaylia chose to dedicate her Burger of the Month funds to Old MacDonald Kennels after experiencing pet adoption firsthand “I chose OMK as my charity because we adopted one of our Great Danes from there 2 years ago. She was very scared of all people including us, but now she loves us & has turned into such an amazing dog! Their kennel is full of animals that need adopting & I want every pet to get the chance to have a loving family”.

Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Azaylia helped us hand over $1232 to Old MacDonald Kennels today (Saturday, October 1st).  Thanks to the amazing support we see from our guest’s month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $110,000 to local charities over the past 68 months!  THANK-YOU!

Giving back to the Kidney Foundation with our Burger of the Month!

When you have a tradition of #CaeserSundayFamilyFunDay and want to use it as inspiration to create a burger to give back, we’re ALL IN!  Our August Burger of the Month Guest Chef in Red Deer Rene Rondeau has already used his Caesar making skills to give back to the Kidney Foundation, but he was ready to amp those efforts up by helping to create “The Dirty Caesar Burger”.

It included two Alberta Beef Smash patties, white cheddar, sliced genoa salami, house-made teriyaki BBQ sauce and a (dirty) Caesar aioli, with fresh arugula, sliced tomato, fresh sliced onion, garnished with a pickle spear on a garlic buttered brioche bun.  $2 from every Burger sold is going directly to Rene’s charity of choice The Kidney Foundation Northern Alberta & The Territories.

The Kidney Foundation hits close to home for Rene and his family, they have walked beside family friends with children impacted by the disease and have been doing their part to support them by participating in the 100 km Kidney Foundation March as well as local walks for several years.  “We have seen the effects that kidney diseases have taken on the kids and families we know, one battles cystinosis and the other family has siblings who deal with genetic polycystic kidney disease.  These kids and families have seen it all, from daily treatments of medication, numerous hospital visits outside of Red Deer, to ongoing health conditions that impact their day to day lives.  What’s amazing with these kids and their families, no matter what they are dealing with, they keep pushing through the pain and fatigue that comes with battling a sickness.  Strongest kids I know that is for sure.”

Maureen Wade with the Northern Alberta & The Territories Branch of The Kidney Foundation says donations like this one support individuals throughout their kidney and transplant journey.  “Our programs ensure patients have transportation access to attend lifesaving dialysis and medical appointments, to access sufficient and nutritious food that meet strict diets, to pay for prescribed medications, and an array of needs specific to each client. We also offer free Kidney Camp experience to children, provide hands-on peer support, educational resources, and more.”  She also notes the last two years have been extremely difficult for both kidney and transplant patients in Alberta due to the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing the reliance on The Kidney Foundation to help meet both basic and critical needs.

Because of your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Rene helped us hand over $1346 to The Kidney Foundation today (Tuesday, September 6th).  Thanks to the amazing support we see from our guest’s month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $110,000 to local charities over the past 67 months!  THANK-YOU!

Some words from Rene:
“The kidney foundation is close to our family, through our friends over the years. We have had close friends whose kids have been battling through their kidney diseases for years now. The two families have different types of kidney diseases impact their children. With so many different types of diseases affecting kidneys it peaked our interest to help those families in Red Deer by participating in several fundraisers throughout the year.
We have seen the effects that Kidney diseases have taken on the kids and families we know, one battles cystinosis and the other family has siblings who deal with genetic polycystic kidney disease. These kids and families have seen it all, from daily treatments of medication, numerous hospital visits outside of Red Deer, to ongoing health conditions that impact their day to day lives.

Peavey Mart CEO helps us give back to the Parkinson Association of Alberta!

A burger stuffed with Babybel cheese?!  Oh HECKYEAH that’s what went down at our Red Deer location, the perfect burger to kick off summer!

Local Guest Chef Doug Anderson of Peavey Industries provided the creative juices for the “Stuffed BBQ Burger” which included two smash elk patties, ground pork and caramelized onions, stuffed with mini Babybel cheese.  It was served on a toasted potato roll with roasted garlic aioli, Troubled Monk open road BBQ sauce, shredded lettuce, green pepper with jalapeño jelly, and skewered with dill pickle spear!  $2 of every burger sold goes to Doug’s charity of choice, the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta, Central Alberta chapter.

It is with a heavy heart that Doug made his charity selection, in honour of co-worker and friend Albert Lee, who recently passed away from an aggressive form of Parkinson’s Disease.  Doug notes “Albert cared deeply for his wife, children and grandchildren and the disease not only shortened his successful career, but also robbed him of time with his family”.

Parkinson disease is a progressive neurological disorder.  It mainly affects parts of the brain controlling movement.  There is currently no cure for Parkinson disease and no treatment has been proven to slow, stop or change the progression of Parkinson’s.  Parkinson Association of Alberta provides support, services, and programs for the more than 15,000 people living with and loving those with Parkinson disease in Alberta, including one-on-one/family support counselling, support groups, information and resources, education sessions, help identifying community and government resources and more.

Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Doug helped us hand over $1588 to the Parkinson’s Association today (Wednesday, July 20th).  Thanks to the amazing support we see from our guest’s month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $105,000 to local charities over the past 65 months!

THANK-YOU!

It’s a Home Run giving back to the Gulls Give Foundation!

Nothing short of a grand slam in Red Deer in May as Sully of the Sylvan Lake Gulls stepped up to the plate as Burger of the Month Guest Chef!

The Sylvan Lake Gulls mascot hit it out of the park with the “Dugout Dog”! It included an Alberta beef smash patty, Alberta beef hotdog, toasted potato roll bun, house dill pickle dijon mustard, smoked ketchup, caramelized onions, shredded iceberg lettuce, spicy cheese sauce and peppered bacon! $2 from every burger sold is going directly to the Gulls Give Foundation. The Sylvan Lake Gulls are part of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL). Graham and Jennifer Schetzsle introduced the Gulls Give Foundation right alongside the team in 2019, with a promise to make a difference, and return generosity in positive and meaningful ways by engaging with organizations who deliver programs supporting local vulnerable populations.

Graham and Jennifer say the same game principals utilized on the ball field apply to building community “great communities and teams are built on the principals of teamwork. Our foundation was formed to create a community within a community, aiming to make a difference in vulnerable populations. Whether it big or small we aim to make a difference”.

Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Sully helped us hand over $1288 to the Gulls Give Foundation at Friday’s Gulls Game (Friday, June 10th). Thanks to the amazing support we see from our guest’s month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $105,000 to local charities over the past 64 months!
