Our Lacombe July Burger of the Month Results – just incredible!!
Incredible. The only word that works to describe our July Burger of the Month Guest Chef’s in Lacombe, Kody and Kelsey Kenway! We first met this couple over 5 years ago when they entrusted us to cater the food for their wedding, and each year they return to visit us to celebrate their anniversary, wedding dress, suit and all! This year they cranked the celebration WAY up and jumped out of a plane together in their duds!
Not only are Kody and Kelsey incredible humans, but their story around their charity selection is also moving. Without STARS Kody would not be here. In September of 2015 Kody was in a motor-vehicle accident that resulted in significant polytrauma, suffering traumatic brain injury, collapsed lungs, a ruptured spleen, broken bones and more, leading to a stroke and left-sided paralysis. At the time the couple was recently engaged and set to be married July of 2016. Despite 3-4 challenge filled months, the couple was married as planned and remains forever thankful to STARS and all the medical staff and supporters they have encountered along the way.
The pair co-created the “FULLY LOADED”, which landed on our Lacombe menu in July. It included two️ grilled beef smash patties, cheddar cheese, jalapeno jack cheese, sliced jalapenos, Nashville style BBQ sauce, maple bourbon bacon jam, crispy onion strings, iceberg lettuce, shaved white onion, beefsteak tomatoes, chipotle aioli on a garlic butter toasted pretzel roll. $2 from every “Fully Loaded” sold is going directly to STARS Air Ambulance.
STARS Air Ambulance is dispatched an average of 8 missions a day, flying over 1400 yearly missions in Alberta. Donations and fundraising account for nearly 40% of funding, allowing them to save lives equipped with the right tools, technology, and fleet to ensure timely critical care even in remote locations.
Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program we were able to deliver $1468 to STARS (Tuesday, August 10th). The Kenway’s were also inspired to match our donation to a local organization they are also passionate about, A Better World. Kelsey had the opportunity to travel to Africa with the Lacombe based group on a volunteer rehabilitation effort, focused on addressing the needs of children with disabilities. The Kenway’s also delivered $1468 to A Better World today!
Thanks to the amazing support we see from our guests for our Burger of the Month program month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $85,000 to local charities over the past 54 months! THANK-YOU!
The August Burger of the Month in Lacombe is the “Rocky Mountain Chicken Burger”, created in collaboration with local guest Chef Michelle Swanson. It includes grilled marinated fresh chicken breast, cheddar cheese, raspberry and chipotle BBQ sauce on a garlic butter grilled brioche bun. Topped with a fresh garlic scape, pistachio and grana Padano cheese pesto, baby spinach and vine ripened beefsteak tomatoes. Garnished with jalapeno slices on a bamboo skewer! $2 from every Lacombe August Burger of the Month sold will go directly to Rocky Mountain House Search & Rescue.

Albertans are out recreating, camping and enjoying the west country more and more each summer and the volunteers with Rocky SAR want everyone to enjoy the outdoors safely and responsibility. As a nonprofit organization, SAR relies on donations for specialized training of their volunteers such as Mountain and High Angle Rescues. Their “Adventure Smart” programs help educate all ages from ‘how to plan a trip’ to ‘what to do’ if they become lost. Giving back to our Veterans is one of the best feelings of all
We’ve never forgotten our roots and where we made our start and man it felt good to spend some time with one of our very first loyal Cilantro and Chive guests and supporters Jamil Rawji! A true community leader devoted to serving others, Jamil was our May Burger of the Month Guest Chef at our Lacombe location.
Jamil is the owner of Ponoka Professional Pharmacy and he helped serve up a little spice that the Doctor surely ordered! His “Royal 66″ included a marinated chicken breast, pepper jack cheese, arugula, sliced tomato and pickles, shaved onion, and Moroccan aioli on a garlic butter brioche bun! $2 from every Lacombe May Burger of the Month sold will go directly to Jamil’s charity of choice the Ponoka Legion Branch 66.
Recognizing revenue streams are down, Jamil and his family wanted to show their appreciation and support for a community organization that is a second home to those who have served our country. Offering up a place for the whole community to connect, Jamil says his family misses the socialization and support the Legion offers to the community.
The pandemic has severely impacted the Legion’s ability to generate revenue, they rely on events, rentals of their facility and memberships. Despite the obstacles over the last 15 months, the Legion launched a Poppy Store, selling Legion masks, commemorative pins, and branded clothing. They’ve made every effort to shift Veteran support to keeping connected with phone calls and letters. Branch 66 received its charter and opened on May 4th, 1928. Their mission is to serve Veterans, regardless of where or when they served, including military and RCMP members and their families, to promote Remembrance and to serve the community and country.
Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Jamil helped us hand over $812 to Ponoka Legion Branch 66 today (Friday, June 5th). OH DEER! Look at the results from our Red Deer Burger of the Month!
Oh deer, oh deer, oh deer our team served up a LOT of burgers in April at our Red Deer location! To say we had a little fun with our April Guest Chef’s, the boys from the Oh, Deer… podcast would be an understatement.
We jumped at the opportunity to work with Ted Emmett, Dustin Moore, Ryan Lund and Kevin Walsh who chat about all things Red Deer, living in Alberta and just life in general on their podcast. Their “OH DEER” burger was a ground elk patty, topped with bacon jam, Troubled Monk open road BBQ sauce, mac n’ cheese smash patty, crumbled sweet heat Doritos and Troubled Monk rebels red beer battered onion ring on a brioche bun! $2 from every burger sold is going directly to their charity of choice HEROS Hockey and their efforts to launch a SuperHEROS program to serve Red Deer and area.
Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) is a volunteer-driven charity that uses the game of hockey to teach life-skills and empower Canada’s marginalized youth. HEROS’ free programs provide young people a team for life by celebrating in their first goal on the ice and assisting in their dreams off the ice. Their SuperHEROS programs in Calgary, Edmonton and Regina provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment to youth living with physical and cognitive challenges. HEROS is currently working with the Red Deer Rebels, Blackfalds Bulldogs and other community stakeholders to establish a regional program to serve central Alberta, with kids set to hit the ice this fall.
For Ted, Dustin, Lund and Walsh hockey has been a huge part of their lives, and a sport that has given back to each of them in different ways. They see this as a small way they can help ensure more people can have those same experiences, regardless of any barriers. All four have been supporters of Motionball and the Special Olympics for many years, and they see this as another opportunity to give back and (hopefully) change the lives of many. For Ted personally, he has more than one family member living with a mental disability, so he is passionate about bringing the SuperHEROS program to central Alberta to give the opportunity to play hockey to many more athletes.

Results from our Lacombe April Burger of the Month!
BOOM! Much like our firecracker of a Guest Chef for April in Lacombe, burger sales most definitely went off like a bang!
A little spice and everything nice is the perfect way to sum up Guest Chef Merry Kuchle! Merry, originally from Alabama, is a blogger, entrepreneur, and all-around stand-up community member. She now calls Gull Lake home and owns and operates Merry’s Mercantile in Bentley. Her “SOUTHERN COMFORT” burger included a smoke marinated chicken breast, Alabama white sauce, Birmingham slaw, zesty pimento cheese (queso) on a toasted potato roll skewered with pepperoncini! $2 from every Lacombe April Burger of the month sold is going directly to Merry’s charity of choice the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES).
Supporting women and children impacted by family violence is a cause close to Merry’s heart, as she has seen the effects firsthand. Long ago, she herself was able to leave a difficult situation with the help of a caring support network. Merry would love to pay it forward to local women who are seeking safer futures for their families.
We all know these are extremely difficult times, and Roxanne Kirton with CAWES says the pandemic has added a layer of complexity to domestic and intimate partner violence, due to the vulnerability of families and isolation requirements. Experts have reported a 57% increase in calls, texts and chats to Alberta’s One Line for Sexual Violence since the start of the pandemic, and there’s also been an increase of calls to the shelter’s 24-hour crisis line and requests for admission. Further complicating an already dire situation Kirton says CAWES has lost a significant amount in donations due to cancelled fundraisers and events because of the pandemic over the last year. Kirton says donations like this one will help them continue to provide a safe and secure place for women and children to live, when their home is too dangerous. Children have access to a safe bed, clothes, school supplies and their Children’s Healing Centre and mothers have access to 24-hour crisis intervention and emotional support, nurturing parent programs and support groups and individual cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
