Giving back to our Veterans, one Burger at a time.

BEHOLD ? our Lacombe ? May Burger of the Month!
“??? ????? ??”
Created in collaboration with local Guest Chef Jamil Rawji

$2 from every Burger sold going directly to the Ponoka Legion Branch 66 ❤️??

Marinated chicken breast, pepper jack cheese, arugula, sliced tomato + pickles, shaved onion and moroccan aioli on a garlic buttered brioche bun!
Jamil is a husband and father of 3, and very active in the Ponoka community for years.
Jamil : “We chose the Legion as we recognize revenue streams are down. With the lack of in person attendance, decreased memberships and the inability to rent their facility for events- we want to show our appreciation and support the organization that is a second home to those who have served our country. It is open to everyone and we miss the socialization and support the Legion offers to the community”.
Very much looking forward for another tasty month of giving back to our community and the brave men and women who served for our country! ?

Two AMAZING young women helping support Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation

BEHOLD ? our Red Deer May Burger of the Month!

“??? ??? ?????!” ??

Created in collaboration with local Guest Chefs Allyne Simonot + Lily Forsyth

With marinated chicken breast, bacon, sunny fried egg, arugula, tomato, balsamic glaze and lime avocado aioli on a brioche bun!

$2 from every BIG SMILE burger sold going directly to the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation ?

Allyne and Lily are both students of Notre Dame High School in Red Deer, and part of the Notre Dame Grad Service Project! This year, the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation was chosen for the project by the graduating students.

Allyne Simonot :
“The Notre Dame class of 2021 agreed that in light of the many events, or lack thereof, that mental health should be a priority now more than ever. Thus we chose the charity – Smiles through Lindsey. We all know first hand the toll taken to our lifestyle nonetheless life as we knew, and a lack of the necessary supports to weather these challenges would be catastrophic. Lindsey More was, like us, a Notre Dame graduate. After she tragically took her life in 2015, her family began Smiles Thru Lindsey. She was a regular happy girl, nothing seemingly wrong. She was involved in the school community through sports and the grad service project of 2011. We knew that our school community would connect to her and her story as easily as it has.”

Lily Forsyth :
“This cause is actually very personal for me, it is another way for me to support my friends who are struggling, a way to communicate to every person who is willing to listen that they are not alone. That everyone is feeling or has felt a toll on their mental health and that there are resources and people out there to help.”

So this month, let’s start spreading more SMILES ☺ and happiness, and giving to such an important organization!

Helping the United Way “Period Promise” Campaign in Red Deer!

What happens when you get a team of women together, some local breweries and a great cause?!  Plenty of smiles and laughs, tasty beer of course and a nice chunk of change to help fuel an incredible pilot project underway in some Red Deer Public Schools.

In mid April, eight female team members from Cilantro and Chive had the opportunity to spend some time at four local breweries, creating casks to serve up as part of a “Period Promise” campaign fundraiser.  Huge thanks to Blindman Brewing, Snake Lake Brewing Company, Troubled Monk and Red Hart Brewing for their generous contributions of time and product to help make this event a reality.

United Way Central Alberta is fuelling that “Period Promise” campaign and Soroptimist International Central Alberta is behind a pilot project that will bring free tampons, pads, and dispensers to all washrooms at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, Eastview Middle School, Normandeau School and G.H. Dawe School.  Dispenser installation is underway now.

An international movement is building, bringing public awareness to period poverty, and the need for free and accessible access to menstrual products in public restrooms, including schools.  Periods are a fact of life and menstrual products are a necessity, sadly not everyone can afford them.  The campaign will help ensure students do not miss school, extracurricular, sports or social activities because they don’t have access to the products they need, helping restore dignity and gender equality.

This pilot project bears a $27,000 price tag.  A gender-equality grant from the Red Deer District Community Foundation will help take care of more than $20,000 and the United Way Central Alberta is funding the remainder.

On Tuesday, April 20th all four casks were served up at our Red Deer location with 100% of proceeds earmarked for the “Period Promise” campaign.  Cilantro and Chive Lacombe Assistant Manager Danika Foesier was thrilled to turn over a cheque for $1000 today, April 26th.

Thank you for supporting Red Deer Meals on Wheels!

There is seriously nothing better than 2 Burgers of the Month and our Red Deer and area has really stepped up to get behind this program.  Thank You!

Roxanne Martin served as our 2nd Red Deer Guest Chef, helping to create the “You Grow Girl”.   Her burger included a brown rice, walnut & black bean patty, jalapeño jack cheese, avocado crema, chipotle aioli, iceberg lettuce, beefsteak tomatoes, sliced onion and pickles on a potato roll! $2 from every burger sold is going directly to Roxanne’s charity of choice, Red Deer Meals on Wheels.

As a local foodie and food blogger, Roxanne is passionate about great food and believes that no one should go without a decent meal!  Not only does food nourish us, but it also brings us together and it’s that connection piece that is so powerful in Roxanne’s eyes.  My grandmother passed away last year; we were able to deliver some meals to her while she was isolated before she passed. It made all the difference for her. My elderly neighbor lost his wife and broke his hip recently; I’ve seen firsthand how much a meal can bring us together and can make a difference in someone’s day.”  She is grateful these services exist in our community and knows just how essential they have been through the pandemic, not just helping to meet people’s basic needs, but providing a social and caretaking lifeline for those unable to cook for themselves.

Red Deer Meals on Wheels has been in operation since 1979, providing a hot, nutritious noonday meal to those unable to prepare or obtain one for themselves.  They have close to 50 volunteers who help deliver approximately 20,000 meals a year.  Donations help ensure they can continue to support their clients with nutritious and affordable meals.  Volunteers are the lifeblood of their organization; they are always looking to recruit volunteers to deliver meals and to serve on their Board of Directors.

Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Roxanne helped us hand over $972 to Red Deer Meals on Wheels today (Friday, April 23rd).  Thanks to the continued amazing support we see from our guests for our Burger of the Month program month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $75,000 to local charities over the past 50 months!  THANK-YOU!

The April Burger of the Month in Red Deer is the “OH DEER”!  Created with Guest Chefs Ted Emmett, Ryan Lund, Dustin Moore and Kevin Walsh of the Oh, Deer…podcast.   It’s a ground elk burger, topped with bacon jam, Troubled Monk open road bbq sauce, mac n’ cheese smash patty, crumbled sweet heat doritos and Troubled Monk rebels red beer battered onion ring on a brioche bun! $2 from every burger sold will do directly to Heros Hockey and their efforts to launch a SuperHEROS program to serve Red Deer and area.

Giving back to local schools, one Ice Cream Sandwich at a time!

We sure missed interacting with the kids at school, but we still soaked in plenty of smiles from those who had the opportunity to dine in and enjoy our teams’ latest ice cream sandwich creation in support of Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus in Blackfalds.

Under our School Ice Cream Sandwich Program, every three months we select a local school to benefit from ice cream sandwich sales, kicking back $1 of every sandwich sold to a program or project that could use a boost at the school.

Our latest creation was the “Super Hero” ice cream sandwich, it included strawberry, banana, blueberry ice cream nestled in-between 2 house baked double chocolate cookies, and a house-made bubble gum whipped cream!  $1 from every ice cream sandwich sold is supporting the Nutrition Program at Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus.

Under the Nutrition Program, every week fresh fruits are delivered to classrooms providing an alternative for students at snack time or lunchtime or whenever they are hungry. It helps the school infuse healthy alternatives and build those healthy eating habits in kids.  Iron Ridge also has a staff member who prepares different types of food for students to sample and sends the recipes home for families to try.  Recently a tower garden was also set up for the nutrition program to utilize.

Typically, we would host a pop-up ice cream sandwich sale at the school, utilizing students to serve up those tasty sandwiches to their peers. Unfortunately, covid restrictions meant we could not execute the pop-up this time around but we sure hope to get back to doing them again soon!  Regardless we are THRILLED to support Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus and their Nutrition Program, handing over a cheque for $448 today (April 8th).

Stay tuned, we’re gearing up to also kick off this program at our new Red Deer location, allowing us to support even more local schools who are all working hard to educate our future community leaders!

Results from our very FIRST Red Deer Burger of the Month!

SAY WHAT?!  TWO Cilantro and Chive locations, TWO Burger’s of the Month, TWICE the GIVING!!  That’s exactly what happened in February as we introduced Guest Chef’s and Burgers exclusive to each location, one for Lacombe, one for Red Deer.

Dustin Harper of Bo’s Bar and Stage helped create our Red Deer Burger, the “Rink Burger”.  It included two smash burger patty’s, smoked cheddar, house ketchup, grainy honey yellow mustard, red onion and neon green dill pickle relish on a potato roll wrapped in a hockey rink style foil bag!  $2 from every burger sold is going directly to his charity of choice, the Normandeau School Values Program.

Dustin is connected in the Red Deer community, heard about the new school program, and was eager to jump in to help.  He LOVES the concept of kids being rewarded for being good kids.

Normandeau School Principal Lisa Spicer says they are just at the beginning stages of launching the program, which is centered around Red Deer Public School Values for Learning and Life. Teaching, recognizing and celebrating the following values: Respectful, Responsible, Curious, Collaborative, Resilient and Healthy.  Staff are provided with slips that they can award to students who demonstrate any of those core values.  Students in turn can use those slips for entries into classroom and school draws for prizes to help celebrate their efforts.

Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Dustin helped us hand over $1364 to the Normandeau School Values Program today (Monday, March 8th).  Thanks to the continued amazing support we see from our guests for our Burger of the Month program month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $70,000 to local charities over the past 49 months!  THANK-YOU!

WOW! Our February Burger of the Month results for Lacombe are in!

SAY WHAT?!  TWO Cilantro and Chive locations, TWO Burger’s of the Month, TWICE the GIVING!!  That’s exactly what happened in February as we introduced Guest Chef’s and Burgers exclusive to each location, one for Lacombe, one for Red Deer.

Lacombe City Councillor Cora Hoekstra helped create “The Spicy Yorkshire” for our Lacombe location.  It included a grilled Alberta beef patty on toasted Yorkshire pudding buns, horseradish cream cheese spread, house jalapeno jam, mixed greens, beefsteak tomatoes, pickled red onions and sliced pickles garnished with cajun onion rings!  $2 from every Lacombe Burger of the Month sold will go directly to Cora’s charity of choice, the Lacombe & District Historical Society.

It’s no secret Lacombe is home to some of the most beautiful buildings and just has character, because of our history.  Cora was keen to support an organization that highlights that history and reminds us of the people who came before us, who thought this area was worth settling down in and investing in.  She says “We need the Society to keep drawing our attention to the value of our buildings and ancestors, to appreciate how far we have come.  I wanted to support an organization that is not always noticed”.

2021 marks the 50th Anniversary for the Lacombe and District Historical Society who operates the Michener House Museum and Archives and the Blacksmith Shop Museum.  Provincial funding sources have been reduced and the pandemic have had an impact on the non-profit community organization with museums closed, community festivals, fundraising events, exhibit galas, and school tours all cancelled.  The Society uses donations for programming and exhibits.  They are currently working to preserve their extensive photography and negative collections, a BIG endeavor with thousands of negatives and prints in their care.

Thanks to your support of our beloved Burger of the Month Program Cora helped us hand over $1062 to the Lacombe and District Historical Society today (Friday, March 5th).  Thanks to the amazing support we see from our guests for our Burger of the Month program month after month, we have had the opportunity to give back over $70,000 to local charities over the past 49 months!  THANK-YOU!

The March Burger of the Month in Lacombe is the “Loaded Potato Skin Burger”, created in collaboration with local Guest Chef Al Scholing of Scholing’s Produce.  It’s an Alberta beef patty, two Scholing’s baked potato “buns”, with shredded cheddar, pepper bacon, green onion, sour cream, iceberg lettuce, beefsteak tomatoes, sliced onion and pickles.  $2 from every burger sold is going directly to Al’s charity of choice the Team Jigger Foundation.
